We pledge to introduce more female role models in STEMM outside of academia and host cross-campus events.
WISE@QMUL’s mission as a society is to raise awareness of gender biases in the STEMM sectors and to give women the confidence and supportive network to pursue top leadership roles in both academia and industry.
We believe this discussion should not remain closed within QMUL so we are opening our free membership to all interested parties from academia and industry. Of course, men as well as women are welcome to join us.
Our two key goals for 2014 are to:
(i) introduce female role models in STEMM outside of academia to highlight the diversity of career paths open to women with STEMM training; and
(ii) build links to WISE groups at other institutions and companies in the region in order for us to host successful cross-campus events.
We have an exciting line-up of guest speakers at our events this semester, including:
Full details will be released shortly, so sign up for our free membership to be the first to receive the latest news. And don’t forget to follow us on twitter too: @WISEQMUL.
If you have links to a local WISE group and would like to collaborate with WISE@QMUL please get in touch via our contact form. We are open to all suggestions for events and sponsorship.

Secretary/Webmaster, WISE@QMUL 2014
We’ve had a big changeover recently as old committee members leave and new ones have arrived to carry on the good work! So we’re saying goodbye to Salzitsa, Diana, Aleks, and Anna – thanks for all your hard work and I’ve really enjoyed working on events with you. We’re welcoming Aurora (evaluation), Helen (treasurer), Asmi, and Louise (secretary) – thanks for joining us! Eva will also be taking on a role as our room booking and catering guru.
Look out for events being planned for the end of April!
Chair, WISE@QMUL Committee 2013
Hi WISE members,
A belated new year to you and I hope the start of the academic year is going well for you. You’re probably knee-deep in experiments and paper writing by now…I hope the holidays aren’t too distant a memory!
What has the WISE committee been up to?
Joanne has taken over from Nela as Chair of WISE@QMUL. We’re sorry to see Nela go as a really dynamic and excellent leader of WISE. She’s taking a break to start writing up her thesis. Thank you Nela for all your hard work!
We had a committee social at the lovely Ariana restaurant in Mile End, and caught up with our holiday news. We’ve also been planning the spring events. The first of which is on the 28th February at lunchtime, and will tackle the evidence for employment bias against women in science. We hope you can come along; please save the date.
Finally we’re looking for committee members to replace friends that will be leaving. Anyone is welcome, from undergrads to lecturers at QMUL. It doesn’t need to be a big time commitment. Please email us at email@example.com or use our contact form for more info.
See you soon!
After more than eight months of inactivity, WISE@QMUL finally comes back to life with a new look and new members on board!

There will be catering by L’Oasis including pitta and humous, olives and cheeses, and drinks, and a couple of short speeches introducing the society, including one from Ursula Martin, the vice principal for science and engineering.
And don’t forget: both men and women are welcome, so bring along your friends and colleagues!
See you on Friday!
